- Breeding of animals for the food industry,
- Cattle and sheep slaughter sites where skinning and the first stages of preservation are practiced, in particular salting or cold preservation.
- Collecting: the skins are collected by the collectors and traders who sort, select and handle again: desalting for example or salting in a fuller if the (sheep) skins have not yet undergone this step...
- Some large slaughterhouses manage the selections themselves and have invested in robotic handling and laser traceability.
- Label traceability is used in other slaughterhouses.
- The salted skins arrive in tanneries for river operations, tanning, currying and finishing.
- River work consists of "cleaning" the skins: depilation and fleshing make it possible to remove the epidermis, hair and fat.
- The tanning phase will transform the skin into leather by making it rot-proof thanks to the tanning agents.
- Wrought ironing operations provide strength, hand, color and flexibility
- The finish protects the leather on the surface and provides the final visual appearance.
